UMM. MALE MASTOLOGY UNIT.
In November 2005 Dr. Juan Ballesta and his team of doctors set up, and have since developed, a new healthcare unit; the UMM (male mastology unit). The male mammary gland is just as important as the female gland but is often forgotten, which does not make it any less important. The unit comprises experienced specialists in the field of treating male mammary gland diseases, from a diagnostic point of view, x-rays, ultra-sound, NMR, 3D NMR, cytology, etc, as well as of their treatment and can cover congenital diseases (e.g. Poland’s Syndrome), to development (e.g. Gynecomastia) and even oncological ones (e.g. breast cancer).
NGO ACTIVITIES.
At the VIII Syrian-Spanish Conference held in March 2005, in Damascus, we carried out several surgical interventions of immediate mammary reconstruction on Syrian women affected by breast cancer. These had a dual purpose, teaching and healthcare. The interventions were done at the Assad University Hospital Damascus. On December 2005 we carried out the first reconstructive Plastic Surgery intervention on a girl from the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (Sahara), affected by sequelae of a burn to the neck.
